Spooky Halloween Pumpkin Flower Arrangement
I love Halloween. Ever since I was a little and would have small parties at home, apple bobbing, dressing up as a witches cat (always, the cat!?). It has been one of my favourite times of year.
I was hoping to run a socially distant flower class teaching how to make a Halloween pumpkin flower arrangement. A little thing called a pandemic and a Cardiff and then Wales lockdown has put a stop to these plans. So I thought I would give a little step by step guide here.
Have a go and I would love to see what Spooky Halloween Pumpkin flower arrangements you end up with.
The first stage to making your Halloween pumpkin flower arrangement is, of course, to carve out your pumpkin. You can then treat the inside with a bleach solution. This is the best method to prevent your carved pumpkin from rotting. You can spray your pumpkins, including the inside, the edges and all cut openings with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of bleach per litre of water. This will help to get rid of all the mould, mildew and other unwanted stuff.
I then add a water source to the pumpkin.
I know other florists make these in different ways, some use oasis, you all know my feelings on this product. If you don’t know, I am against it because it is not good for the environment. Basically, if you don’t have to use it, don’t. You really don’t have to use it here. I have written a blog that will help educate you. Read it here.
So for this Pumpkin flower arrangement I have used a recycled jar to put the flowers in. Make sure your vase/jar, whatever you use, sits inside the pumpkin and doesn’t stick out of the top. This will make arranging the flowers easier.
You then get to the fun bit of making your Halloween pumpkin flower arrangement. Time to arrange your flowers.
Ensure you choose suitable materials. Stick with autumnal colours, oranges, browns, reds. I like to add a bit of pink to the mix. You can use dried (dying) materials which will add to the overall effect. Oak leaves that are turning orange/brown are perfect for this display.
I have used a few roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, symphoricarpus berries, yellow craspedia, some dried hydrangea, sedum, nerines, rose hips, dried seed heads, a tiny bit of lunaria, a few physalis and foliage.
Keep turning the pumpkin around to ensure you are designing your flowers all the way around. If this is a front facing flower display (only to be viewed from the front) you don’t need to add much product to the back. I have recorded a video of me making an arrangement, although it was recorded earlier in the year, exactly the same process applies here. You can have a watch by following this link: https://www.facebook.com/PetalPowerWales/videos/300353077832562
If you don’t want to watch the video my advice is to add the greenery first to hide the edge of the vase and pumpkin. Think about getting the flowers and foliage to cascade over. Then add the flowers. I like to add my flowers in odd numbers, it was the way I was taught, all those years ago.
There you have it, the final flower arrangement. Add s few festive bits, some cobwebs and spiders for extra Halloween vibes. I added a few of these awesome gourds, just because. Have a go and have fun!
