How to postpone your wedding smoothly

There is so much uncertainty in the world right now. We have all been affected by COVID-19 in various ways. It looks like this is not going away soon and it will have an impact on our Summer plans too. If you were planning a Summer wedding and are being faced with the unfortunate task of postponing the event; I thought I would put into words how to best help you move forward. Maybe this will help a little.

Obviously the first stop should be to speak to your venue. I would suggest to reach out to them asap. Even if you are not yet sure you will have to postpone, speak to them for a potential plan B (if it is needed). If feasible try to get a few possible dates from them. Consider Sundays or even weekdays as an option. A smooth transition is more likely with the less popular event days. But don’t officially move your date with them JUST YET. A common mistake people are making is declaring their new date after only talking to their venue.

Next, contact all of your vendors and let them know you might have to postpone. Give them your list of possible dates and ask about their availability. Some vendors will have weddings or events booked a year or more in advance. Be mindful that your “top choice” date might not work for all of your vendors. Mentally prepare yourself to be flexible here so that you can find a date that works for all of your vendors.

Ask your venue and all other vendors if there are any fees associated with rescheduling or if pricing will be affected on the new potential dates. I am sure that all vendors are avoiding any fees if at all possible, I know I am.

Please be mindful that you may need to be flexible with your plans for your future date. For example, if you were planning a Spring wedding and your new date is in the Autumn certain flowers may not be in season. Or your outdoor venue space may look a bit different on your new date. Just ask your vendors what changes they anticipate from the original plan, after all, they are the experts.

Once you’ve found a date that works for everyone, ask all your suppliers to update your contract to reflect the new date and any other changes.

We are all feeling a bit lost and uncertain at the moment. I feel for everyone having to deal with all these changes right now. It’s okay to be sad about having to postpone. But please trust me. When you are able to have your wedding or that special celebration it really will be all the sweeter.

Virtual hugs to all.
